Atlanta eCommerce Expert
Recently I had a request to look at an ecommerce website. The site is developed on the Volusion eCommerce platform. I am writing this blog to sort of get my head together on this because I can see this guy put a lot of effort into this and I don’t really have the heart to tell him he wasted his time, almost. Meaning I almost don’t have the heart because I am sure he definately wasted his time.
Volusion is an application service provider whose single goal in life is to collect a monthly fee. Therefore they cannot be trusted. Seriously though, it took me about 45 seconds to come up with the following blatant short-comings:
- No H1 Tag.
- Home link on top nav menu goes to site’s ip address.
- 90% of the product pages have duplicate titles.
- Product titles are not seo friendly.
- URL’s are not seo friendly. There is a crude mod rewrite that renders dynamic pages as .htm but without descriptive names in the url this feature is useless nowadays.
- No Googlebase present.
- No img alt tags.
- That’s enough to kill his chances right there.
So, how do I break this to him? He could really make a TON of money. What he’s doing can be VERY profitable on the net. I did a similar site in the late 90′s that did so well the guy retired early.
Hmmm, I need to think about this one for awhile. It’s really tough being an Atlanta eCommerce developer who happens to be an expert AND compassionate at the same time. I’ll post my recommendation in a day or so.
Any comments? Let me know!
Thanks,
~doug
